Welcome to episode 37 of the Tablet PC Show! This is the first episode I’ve recorded on my new Tablet PC, a Toshiba M200.
Getting the M200 up and running was quite an adventure; a tale with which I begin this podcast. The tablet arrived with no operating system and no good way to install one without buying some expensive additional hardware, so I tried some other tricks, including the use of Knoppix Linux and the BartPE version of Windows.
After my story, I get to the news and updates for this episode…
News and Updates:
- scanR, about whom we’ve talked in the past, have a new service in beta for scanning business cards.
- Microsoft announces the next version of Origami called “Vistagami”.
- The also announce a forthcoming version of mobile devices called “Haiku”.
- TabletKiosk announce a recall on the first shipment of eo UMPCs, which have a battery life problem.
- Vista will ship with a cool peer-to-peer application sharing service.

FYI - You didn’t need to buy that CD drive to install XP tablet. You were on the right track initially. The trick is to make a USB stick look to the laptop like a bootable floppy with DOS on it, have it load nothing but the basics (command.com, io.sys, etc & basic USB CD drivers), assign a drive letter to the CD drive so you can see it and run the install from CD.

FYI part II - Essentially, you’re using the only device you are able to boot from to boot & load drivers so you can access the only device you are able to read your install media from.
Also, when assigning a drive letter to your USB CD it’s good to use D: or higher otherwise it may grab C: making it unavailable during the hard drive format and leaving your final XP build on a D: logical partition.
