Tablet PC Show #36
The Tablet PC Show #036 (MP3 - 13.1MB - 38 min)
Welcome to episode 36 of the Tablet PC Show! I had anticipated that this episode would be shorter than usual, but I’m apparently more long-winded than I thought and ended up going for roughly the usual length of time.
News and Updates:
- HP announces a new tablet, the tc4400, which is a convertable style device and apparently an update to the tc4200.
- Word 2007 is going to support blogging directly from within the application. And OneNote 2007 will, too.
- Updates are available for GeckoTip and Grab And Drag for Firefox users.
- The DualCor cPC will be shipping soon, but without WiFi or Bluetooth or 3G cell phone radios built in.
- A Korean company called NAVIsis has released an attachment that turns any monitor into a touchscreen.
- OrigamiProject.com has published a great article with tips and tricks for tweaking your UMPC.
- Sony has announced the Vaio UX, a micro PC that is not a UMPC.
- Samsung releases some performance numbers for their new hybrid flash memory / hard drives.
- Samsung has also announced the Q1-SSD UMPC which replaces the hard drive with a 32GB flash memory drive. It’s fast, but pricey.
- Microsoft has filed patents for using UMPCs to control home appliances.
- Microsoft has also released the beta 2 version of Office 2007, including Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to the public.
After the news and updates, I announce my own personal news: I’ve bought a new Tablet PC to replace my existing one.

The data speeds over Cingular HSDPA is WAY faster that EVDO! Check out the MOTR Podcast at: http://www.mobiletechroundup.com/?p=75. However, it is more expensive.
Also, GSM has 1.8 billion users worldwide (all of Europe is GSM) while CDMA is only kinda big here in the US. Therefore, a DualCor CPC as a GSM phone will have more worldwide success.

Yes, HSDPA is faster, however it is not generally available, at least not anywhere here in the U.S. to my knowledge. And I agree that GSM is more widely used and a GSM-enabled cPC would be more successful worldwide than a CDMA version, however, were I DualCor, I would not wait until such a device was available, tested, and approved by the cell vendors; I would do exactly as they have and release a device without cell connectivity.

It’s available in the following areas:

I do agree that DualCor is better off not having a cell phone plan as Palm+Verizon+Sprint has done.

If you are looking for a stylus for your Toshiba, you need to check out the Cross Executive Pen. It comes in two styles: capped and capless. It’s very substantial and feels like a quality pen rather than a 10-for-a-buck Bic. It also has an eraser tip. The only downside is that it won’t fit in the pen silo on a Tablet, so it instead has to be stowed in a pocket or gadget bag. Cost is ~$40.
I ordered one from Amazon afterI pre-ordering my Gateway CX200S, only to find that the new Gateways used Finepoint digitizing technology, not Wacom. I returned it without using it, but it sure felt nice in my hand and probably would have worked well.

Wesley, thanks for the info! I actually already purchased a stylus from Circuit City (around $34), but I bet this would be a good item for my birthday wish list…
I didn’t realize that the Gateways were using the Finepoint digitizer. That’s what my TC1000 uses and the advantage is the hard glass screen, but the disadvantage is that it’s not pressure sensitive. A friend of mine at work just picked up a new Gateway, I’ll have to see if my HP stylus is compatible.

Perry,
I believe there is some difference in the new Finepoint hardware in the Gateways vs. that in the TC 1000, but I haven’t been able to confirm that for sure. I know that the stylus for the 1000 had a user-replaceable battery, where the new Gateways don’t.
Hope you enjoy your new toy when it arrives :-)

Hi Perry,
I was wondering what is your image art for the MP3’s? According to the XML in the RSS, it is located at:
http://tabletpc.thepodcastnetwork.com/wp-admin/coverart_300×300.jpg
However, no image ever comes up. Can you fix this? Thanks!
