I work and think much more easily with one hand than with two. That is why I love my tablet PC. I spend all of my time in the slate mode — so your question was very interesting because I don’t exactly type, but when I have to write for something to be recognized it is clearly less than a paragraph. (I have written some very cryptic e-mails.)

Okay, so this comment is already over a paragraph — what have I done? Well, I had to boot up Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I do all of my longer work through dictation. There are some trade-offs involved, of course. Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and I am sure the Microsoft speech recognition (included in both the current tablet PC operating system and also the new Vista) are real processor and RAM hogs. Moreover, the environment has to be relatively quiet — and no one else within earshot. Finally, there is a certain art to dictation — it is easier to dictate and not look at the screen, although when I write, I would always look at the screen. I suspect that really highly refined and edited writing can only be done with the keyboard.

But when it comes to thinking, ahh, thinking (and making notes on that thinking) is best done with one hand. I can go for days without booting up Dragon NaturallySpeaking. That is why I have come to love GoBinder. I like the way that GoBinder deals with Ink much more than OneNote 2003. When I have finished thinking, I transcribe the notes from GoBinder using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. (Unfortunately, GoBinder’s text increase system does not provide a very good environment for Dragon NaturallySpeaking’s corrections system, so I usually have to use WordPad for the notes and then copy and paste.) (And, wouldn’t you know it, OneNote provides a much better environment for Dragon NaturallySpeaking.)

I’m sure it is more than you ever wanted to know. But thanks for asking.

    Virtually yours, Julie
