The Tablet PC Show #026
The Tablet PC Show #026 (MP3 - 15.4MB - 42 min)
Welcome to episode 26 of the Tablet PC Show! I begin by recapping some feedback from the last episode, especially around the audio quality which is much better now! Then, on to…
News and Updates:
(It was a very slow week news-wise…)
After the news, I discuss what the Tablet PC software environment may look like a year from now with regards to Windows Vista and Office 12. (Hint: It’s better, but not what it ought to be for Tablet PC users.)
I also mentioned that I use intraVnews, an Outlook plug-in for RSS feeds.
I follow up on the discussion from the last episode on the next generation of Tablet PCs. In that episode we discussed the internals (CPU and hard drive) and this time we talk about screens and UI.
This week’s Site of the Week is Sumocat’s Scribbles, which is notable for being written on a Tablet PC and posted as handwriting.
I continue along those lines by talking about blogging in ink and I mention two applications which may help:
Lastly, I discuss last week’s Poll Question of the Week and give this week’s question: Where do you MOST use your Tablet PC? Take the poll here.
I wrap up the podcast by asking for comments and feedback from the listeners.

Well, looks like I’ll be renewing my subscription to the Tablet PC Show. Just hope I can find the time to get caught up. Thanks for the shout-out.

Perry, this second show also shows Marc Orchant and I to be the hosts of your show, no doubt it’s being inserted in the tags by the RSS feed that is distributing the show. I don’t want to be a butt about it but this is confusing the listeners of my show and I need you to fix this. Please pull both of your shows and re-release them with a new RSS that correctly identifies you as the host. I will really appreciate it. Thanks.

Wow. The Tablet PC show is back! Great job and excellent sound quality. :0)
Vista’s feature with sleep then hibernate is available in XP. Just set the hibernate mode to a few hours later than the sleep time. I think some manufacturers provide programs to observe the remaining battery power (before hibernation) as a separate power-management program.
Screen: I have a 14.1″ Acer tablet. I wouldn’t trade it for a smaller screen! It does make the tablet heavier (6+ pounds), but the screen feels much more like an 8.5″ x 11″ paper that I’m used to writing on.
UI: I believe that improving the screen resolution (e.g. 1600 x 1200) could solve a lot of problems with the “small UI.”
Digitizer: I haven’t tried the passive digitizer on a large screen. I do use a Pocket PC, and I can say that it is a bit annoying that my palm can create a false positive. I’ve heard from James Kendrick at www.jkontherun.com, that a company has managed (or is planning) to solve this problem recognizing multiple “pressure points” as a false positive. My preference is surely an active digitizer. However, I wouldn’t mind a switch that can allow the user to switch between both modes as he or she desires.
P.S. The last few minutes of the MP3 were blank. There was nothing recorded from 41 mins 53 secs to 43 mins 44 secs (41:53 - 43:44)

Thanks for the feedback! I noticed the blank minutes at the end of the podcast last night. I’m not sure what caused it, but my guess is I did something wrong in Audacity. I figure by about episode 30 or so (maybe 40), I’ll get this whole thing down to a science…

The show’s sound quality was great, and you have a very good delivery. I. didn’t think you speak too fast, but then again, I’m from NY.
I’ll keep listening.
